In this session, our timely Trio finds their man. A few birds are killed with a few stones, the cops kick down some doors, and the trio goes sewer diving.
Characters
Sweeper. An Elven amnesiac. Quick-thinking and quick with his hands, this Elf awoke one day with only his wits and his name. He has since made a living through less-than scrupulous means.
Aldertwig. Wild Halfling in a big city. This nomad has somehow made her way into the City of Splendors. Don't confuse her naivety for weakness, she can punch you so hard that your brains will leak out your nose.
Imogen. A real Robin Hood. A human sorcerer that grew up on the streets of Waterdeep, Imogen uses her intrinsic magical prowess and sweet-talking to take from the rich and give to the poor.
Session Overview
Nyx spots the warehouse first — a two-story building behind a tall fence, marked with a small Zhentarim symbol on the gate. She takes to the air for a closer look and reports back to Imogen: four creatures inside, and through a ground-floor window, a room full of "Raven People." Imogen sweeps the area with Detect Magic but finds nothing. Sweeper creeps into the courtyard to peer through the window himself, confirming several dead bodies and four Kenku moving among stacks of crates.
The group slips in through a side window. One Kenku hears the intrusion and comes to investigate, only for Sweeper and Aldertwig to silence it before it can raise an alarm. Nyx draws the remaining Kenku into the courtyard by making noise, giving the party a chance to sneak upstairs. She retreats to the Pocket Dimension while the others press on. Inside, a last Kenku manages to knock Imogen unconscious before Sweeper and Aldertwig cut it down; Aldertwig then works to stabilize her, bringing her back to consciousness.
Searching the bodies, the group notices a small sun-shaped symbol on each Kenku's forehead. Sweeper recognizes it as the Xanathar Guild symbol, likely surfaced from the sewers, while the other corpses scattered around belong to Zhentarim men.
A battered figure emerges from a back room: Renaer Neverember. He explains that the Zhents had been after something of his father's, a "Stone Eye," and that the Xanathar Guild seems to have stormed the warehouse hunting for him, mistaking Floon for their true target.
Before the group can slip out, the City Watch arrives, drawn by reports of violence. Captain Staget, tasked with cracking down on gang activity, questions the party before clearing their names and departing. Renaer, worried for his friend, offers to help track Floon down. The group decides to rest for the night at an inn, agreeing to regroup in the morning and search the Dock Ward for a way into the sewers.
The next day, Sweeper locates a manhole marked with the guild's symbol — and a wired alarm rigged to trigger if the cover were lifted. He snips the wire, disarms it, and the group descends. Heading west, they eventually reach a three-way intersection, where the sound of loud chewing leads them to a small creature with a single large central eye, several smaller eyestalks, and a wide, toothy maw beneath its bulbous, fleshy body. After a short fight, the monstrosity is put down, and the group presses on.
Pressing deeper, the party reaches a roundabout where an arrow strikes Nyx, forcing her back into the Pocket Dimension for safety. A hidden goblin takes potshots at the group before being cut down before it can sound any alarm.
Peering through a cracked door, they find Floon on the ground, barely clinging to life, a half-orc's fist wreathed in flame pressed to his chest. Beside him stands something far stranger -a tall, gaunt humanoid with lavender-gray skin, a bulbous head, and four writhing tentacles around a lipless mouth, cradling a pet brain in slender fingers. Speaking telepathically, seemingly aloud, the creature warns the half-orc, Grum'shar, that his "failure" with Floon had better be handled well - or Xanathar himself would hear of it.
Renaer charges in and the trio carefully follows. The tentacled figure lashes out at Renaer, binding him in a spell that turns him hostile toward his own allies, while the pet brain vanishes into a flash of purple light - and Floon rises from the floor, now moving with an unnerving, mindless stillness. The creature sets a stone into a circle etched on the ground, opens a shimmering portal, and disappears through it, stone in hand. Left behind, the group turns their focus to the half-orc mage and brings him down, claiming his spellbook as a prize.
As the spell breaks, Renaer snaps back to himself, shaken and apologetic, and rushes to check on Floon, who remains locked in his strange, zombie-like trance. Imogen examines the stone circle the creature used to vanish and identifies it as a teleportation circle. With nothing left to do here, the group heads back to the Yawning Portal to tend their wounds and rest.
